Islazul Shopping & Leisure Centre

Bovis Lend Lease provided Project & Construction Management for the Islazul Shopping & Leisure Centre in Carabanchel, in the south of Madrid. The development extends to approximately 250.000m² and has over 90.000m² GL and parking for almost 4.100 cars.
The project was developed by a joint venture between Spanish developer, Grupo Lar, Canadian developer, Ivanhoe Cambridge and UK developer Grosvenor.
When opened, Islazul was the largest shopping centre in the city of Madrid and one of the 5 largest shopping centres in the Madrid region. The retail offer is anchored by an Eroski hypermarket, and includes a large selection of fashion, leisure, home ware and accessories boutiques. Visitors to Islazul can also enjoy the extensive leisure facilities including the largest cinema in Madrid, an interactive gaming auditorium, cafés, bars and restaurants.
A translucent ETFE roof over much of the Mall area was a innovative feature for a retail centre in Spain and enhances the shopping experience throughout the centre.
More than 700m² of solar panels at roof level provide centralised domestic hot water for the whole building and the extensive natural vegetation within the leisure court area contributes to the bio-climatic credentials of the design.Having delivered over 1.500.000m² of retail GLA in Spain, Bovis Lend Lease was well placed to provide the client with construction management services and were involved in the project from the initial design phase. Our scope included the coordination and management of the design team, the development and implementation of the procurement strategy and management of all construction activities.
At the peak there were over 800 construction workers on site together with some 1200 people carrying out retail fit out works. Although there were over two million man hours worked, the accident rate was significantly lower than the national average.
The project was lauded for its safety performance, for meeting the aggressive programme established and for achieving excellent construction quality.
The project was shortlisted in the ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards 2009, New Developments (Very Large) Category.
