National Energy Museum

In March 2009 Bovis Lend Lease began its Project Management services for the preconstruction phase of the rehabilitation and Restoration of the old Thermal Power Station in Ponferrada. Our client, the “Ciudad de la Energia” Foundation, Spanish Government, has the task of creating, launching and managing the National Museum of Energy. This museum will have a section dedicated to the presentation of the history of coal mining activities in the Shire and will be erected on the buildings and land occupied by the Thermal Power Station, object of our contract.

The project consists of a new building of more than 1700m2 that will host special exhibits displaying the remains of the old facility demonstrating how the coal was transported from the railway to the boilers where the heat was generated in order to produce electricity in the nearby turbine hall.
The turbine and boiler rooms will be restored to become part of the historical route, as well as the former power station which will provide other services including a cafeteria, shop and so on. The old Trafo building will become the new reception area and ticket office.

The total build area is 6.700 m2, including approximately 5.000 m2 already occupied by the existing buildings.
